With 14 kilometres of white sand beach, clean waters and incredible views of across the bay to Blue Mountain, with recreation trails for hiking, cycling, cross country skiing and snowmobiling, Wasaga Beach is one of the premiere tourist destinations in Ontario. But the Beach and recreation isn’t the whole story of Wasaga Beach.
Although the Town of Wasaga Beach lacks a traditional Ontario downtown with Gothic & Victorian era storefronts, it does have a rich history dating back to the fur trade days when it was part of the main route to the Great North West. During the War of 1812, Wasaga Beach became part of history when the Schooner Nancy was sunk in the Nottawasaga River by the Americans to cut of the supply line to English forts and strategic points beyond. The remains of The Nancy can still be seen today at Nancy Island.
The incredible 14 kilometres of white, sandy beach on Georgian Bay has kept people coming to Wasaga Beach for over 100 years. During the railway heydays in the 1900’s, Wasaga Beach became a destination for summer vacations by families from the city. During World War II servicemen from across Canada who were stationed at nearby Base Borden discovered the wonderful dancehalls and amusement parks. After the war, the popularity of the car made daytrips and cottages popular, a tradition of city dwellers going North to “the Beach” which continues to this day. Many of these daytrippers and cottagers have now made Wasaga Beach their permanent home.
Wasaga Beach became incorporated as a Town in 1974. Boasting a population of approximately 4,000 people, Wasaga Beach has grown to 17,000 full time residents and 16,000 seasonal and part time residents. While best known as a major tourist destination, it is also the fastest growing community in the Province of Ontario and one of the fastest in Canada.
Wasaga Beach is truly a unique community, it is an easy commute to Alliston, Barrie, and the GTA. You don’t need to live in the city to get to your job.
